Open Drainage in Chronic Subdural Hematomas: A Prospective Study of 189 Cases

Background & Importance: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSH) is one of the most frequent intracranial hemorrhages in adults. However, gold standard treatment of CSH is not yet defined. Since the 80’s, closed drainage is a standard among techniques using drains because the open type has been incriminated in high rates of postoperative infections. However, closed drainage requires mat...

Acute, Nontraumatic Spontaneous Spinal Subdural Hematoma: A Case Report and Systematic Review of the Literature

Spontaneous spinal subdural hematoma (sSDH) is a rare condition outright. Moreover, cases that occur spontaneously in the absence of an identifiable etiology are considerably less common and remain poorly understood. Here, we present the case of a 43-year-old man with spontaneous sSDH presenting with acute onset low back pain and paraplegia. Urgent magnetic resonance imaging identified a dorsal...

Chronic subdural hematoma presenting as transient neurologic deficits.

Four patients with symptoms of transient neurological dysfunction were subsequently found to have chronic subdural hematomas (CSDH). The frequency of these episodes diminished significantly after evacuation of the hematoma. The effects of vascular compromise due to the CSDH and to cardiovascular events, more commonly implicated in transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) may be additive. The inclusion...
